Background of the Study

Women’s participation in politics has been a topic of global concern, with significant advocacy efforts directed towards achieving gender equity in political representation. In Nigeria, women’s organizations have played an instrumental role in advocating for greater political involvement and representation of women at various levels of government (Ahmed & Suleiman, 2024). Zaria Local Government in Kaduna State has seen the emergence of several women’s organizations working to address the gender gap in political participation, advocating for policy reforms, increased awareness, and improved access to political platforms for women (Bello & Umar, 2023). Despite these efforts, women remain underrepresented in political leadership roles, and gender inequality continues to persist in the political sphere. This study evaluates the role of women’s organizations in Zaria in advocating for gender equity in politics, examining their strategies, challenges, and impacts on political change.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Women’s organizations in Zaria Local Government have been at the forefront of advocating for gender equity in politics, yet the level of women’s participation in political leadership remains disproportionately low. Despite the advocacy efforts, women continue to face systemic barriers such as cultural biases, limited access to resources, and a lack of political will to implement gender-sensitive policies (Abdullahi & Ibrahim, 2024). This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these organizations in promoting gender equity, focusing on their role in challenging societal norms and influencing political structures that limit women’s political participation in Zaria.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the role of women’s organizations in advocating for gender equity in political participation in Zaria Local Government.

  3. To evaluate the impact of women’s organizations on political changes regarding women’s participation in Zaria.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. How do women’s organizations in Zaria Local Government advocate for gender equity in politics?

  2. What are the challenges faced by women’s organizations in their advocacy for gender equity in politics?

  3. What impact have women’s organizations had on increasing political participation and representation of women in Zaria?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

  2. Societal attitudes and cultural biases are the primary challenges faced by women’s organizations in promoting gender equity.

  3. Women’s organizations have contributed to increased political participation and representation of women in Zaria Local Government.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study will provide a deeper understanding of the role that women’s organizations play in promoting gender equity in political participation in Nigeria. It will highlight the achievements and challenges faced by these organizations and offer recommendations for strengthening their advocacy efforts. The findings will contribute to policy discussions aimed at enhancing women’s political representation in Nigeria, specifically within Zaria Local Government.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study is limited to Zaria Local Government in Kaduna State, focusing on women’s organizations and their efforts to advocate for gender equity in politics. Data will be gathered from women’s organizations, political leaders, and members of the community. The findings may not be applicable to other regions with different cultural and political dynamics.
